Posted Thursday, October 15, 2009 by Michael Konsevitch

The Thunderbirds improved to 3-2 with a 27-20 victory over Central Islip on Saturday. Ryan Andersen led the way offensively and defensively. Offensively he managed a great game, running for 91 yards on seven carries, and completing seven passes for 58 yards. His completion percentage was outstanding and he led an offense that scored touchdowns on four of its six possessions. Defensively he was an animal. He led the team with nine tackles, six solo, broke up one pass, and repeatedly made some bone-crushing hits. He continues to have a great year and has developed into an outstanding safety.

Mike Pellegrino had another excellent game. Offensively he rushed for 116 yards on 17 carries, scoring three touchdowns. He, also, added 4 receptions for 33 yards. On the season, Pellegrino, one of the top players on Long Island, leads the team with 790 yards rushing and has scored 14 touchdowns. Defensively, he played a terrific game with six tackles, four solo, and a tackle for loss.

Brandon Carnevale continues to have an outstanding year at his offensive guard position and his defensive end position. Offensively he made some great blocks paving the way for 247 yards rushing. Defensively he was a beast taking on blockers and stopping any sort of running game CI wanted to have. He had eight tackles, six solo, and three tackles for loss. On the season, he is third on the team with 34 tackles.

Many players had a very strong game as the Thunderbirds won their second straight. John Zullo had eight tackles and made some good blocks at his FB position, Ryan Lanigan had some great blocks, seven tackles and a key interception to seal the victory, and Brian McIlvain did a solid job on the O-Line and made five tackles from his DT position.

This Saturday the Thunderbirds travel to William Floyd to take on the 4-1 Colonials in a great Division I match-up.
