The T-Birds offense played extremely well on Saturday. They had many big-plays and were unstoppable scoring on every offensive drive in the first half. Chris Dale had a great game filling in at fullback for the injured Dylan Clifford. Dale had an unbelievable touchdown on a 47-yard screen pass putting on many jukes and following the outstanding blocks of the offensive linemen down field. This was one of the most exciting plays to watch. Joe Zuco had another fantastic game rushing for 130 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns. His touchdown runs were of 49 and 18 yards. Zuco, the team's leading rusher, has been a very difficult back to stop. These two backs were the Offensive Players of the Game. Other players considered were Ryan Andersen, Jon Sternbach, and the entire offensive line.
Defensively, the T-Birds stopped a very good offensive team in Northport. Jon Sternbach and Kurt Johnson were named Defensive Players of the Game for their stellar performances. Sternbach had seven tackles, broke up three passes, and had his 4th interception on the season, returning it 100 yards for a touchdown, a school-record and one of the more exciting plays you can see in a football game. Johnson had another big game registering 12 tackles, 3 for a loss, and combined with Andrew Grogan on a quarterback sack. Other defensive players who had strong games were Ryan Lanigan, 10 tackles and an interception, Jeremy Leggiero, a team-high 13 tackles, 2 for a loss, Alex Lorenzo, strong game at the end and registering a quarterback sack, and Cody Elsis, great coverage and good tackles.
The special teams, once again, played excellent. Justin Bertone was named the Special Teams Player of the Game with his sixth field goal of the year on six tries and was perfect on all four of his extra points. He, also, kicked another touchback. Bertone now has 40 points on the season. Joe Pellegrino made a touchdown-saving tackle on a long kick return in the first half that really sparked the T-Birds onto their victory.
The T-Birds host Brentwood on Saturday at 1 PM in the first round of the playoffs. This is the first home playoff game for Connetquot since 1994.
