The Thunderbirds beat Walt Whitman on Friday night, 44-7, behind a ferocious defense that held Whitman to 28 total yards thru three quarters and a well-balanced offensive attack.
The Defensive Player of the Game for the second straight week was LB Jeremy Leggiero. Leggiero was a beast making play after play. He led the team with 12 tackles, 6 solo, 2 being for a loss and had a great interception that he returned 19 yards setting up the T-Birds first score of the second half. He amassed these numbers only playing 2 and a half quarters. Other players considered were Alex Lorenzo, 5 tackles and 3 pass deflections, Brandon Carnevale, 5 tackles and a quarterback sack, Jon Sternbach, 4 tackles and an interception, and Ryan Lanigan, 5 tackles, 2 for a loss.
The Offensive Player of the Game was QB Ryan Andersen. Andersen had a great game completing 10 of 15 passes for 111 yards. He made some great throws and led the offense on five scoring drives. Other players considered were Joe Zuco, 85 yards rushing on 8 carries and 2 touchdowns. Leggiero 2 receptions for 26 yards and a 1-yard touchdown run. Lorenzo, 2 receptions for 22 yards and some great blocking. The entire O-Line, Brian McIlvain, John Smith, Mike Compitello, Kevin McHale, and DJ Pamlayne.
The Special Teams Player of the Week was Sophomore Mike Pellegrino. Pellegrino returned 3 punts for 103 yards and had an amazing 45 yard return for a touchdown that sparked the team in the first half. Showing a "No Fear" attitude, he consistently put the offense in great field position. Justin Bertone was also considered for his 5 extra points, 1 Field Goal, and 3 touchbacks.
