Thanksgiving morning at Stony Brook University three T-Birds took the field to participate in the Annual Division I and II Suffolk-Nassau All-Star Game. Doug Smiroldo, James Tripodi, and Chris Shea were three players on the 45-member squad that were selected for the team. All three players were among the over 100 players from Division I and II schools from Suffolk County that tried out for the team. Only All-Division players are allowed to try out for the team and it is an intense two days of rigorous practices before the team is cut down to 45 and finalized.
Smiroldo, Tripodi, and Shea made it throught the cuts to make the team, each playing an important role in the success of the team from Suffolk, winning 27-0 over the Nassau squad. Chris Shea started at offensive tackle providing great protection for the quarterbacks and paving the way for a few nice runs. James Tripodi started at linebacker and made four great tackles. Doug Smiroldo was the leading tackler for the Suffolk team with seven and recovered a fumble late in the 4th quarter inside their own 10-yard line to seal the shutout. Smiroldo was voted the Defensive MVP from Suffolk.
All three players should be very proud of their great achievement and will be missed tremendously by all of their coaches and teammates. All three of you made the T-Bird Nation proud. Best of luck in your future endeavors! We hope to see you on the college gridiron next year!
