Last Thursday night the Connetquot T-Birds beat the Ward Melville Patriots 21-12 to gain their first win on the season. The T-Birds were led by a defense that held Ward Melville to 130 total yards of offense, had two interceptions, and pressured the quarterback often throughout the game. Offensively the T-Birds ran for 200 yards and committed 0 turnovers. It was a great win for the team.

The team started the game off with a great drive capped off by a touchdown run from James Rowland. During the first half they had numerous drives that were stalled by some costly penalties. Right before halftime they added a great touchdown when Sophomore Quarterback Ryan Anderson hit Jonathan Sternbach up the left sideline for a 53-yard touchdown pass which put the T-Birds up 14-0 at the half.

The defense played outstanding throughout the first half swarming to the football and making great tackles. The Patriots were held to 8 total yards of offense during the first two quarters and could never get anything going thanks to a ferocious defense.

The Patriots scored a touchdown to open the second half, while the T-Birds scored a touchdown to open the 4th quarter and give the T-Birds a 21-6 lead. Ward Melville added a touchdown on a 4th down tipped ball with 1:21 left in the game.

Defensive stars from the game were James Tripodi, 8 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks; James Rowland 6 tackles, 2 interceptions; Doug Smiroldo 10 tackles, 2 for a loss; Jeremy Leggiero 7 tackles, 1 for a loss; Vinny Danseglio 6 tackles, 1 for a loss; and Alex Lorenzo 5 tackles, 1 for a loss.

Offensive stars were Ryan Anderson who completed 67% of his passes for 84 yards; Jonathan Sternbach who had 2 receptions for 70 yards; Smiroldo 77 total yards and a touchdown; Tripodi 79 yards rushing; Rowland 42 yards rushing and a touchdown; and James Campbell who made all three extra points, kicked 2 punts inside the 10 yard line, and had a touchback on a kickoff.

Great performances were also put forth by the Offensive line. These guys did a good job providing some solid blocks all night. Steve Cluen, Chris Shea, John Smith, Dylan Clifford, Brian Taylor, Sam Thorton, and Vinny Danseglio deserve some recognition for a job well done.

The T-Birds host 2-0 Bay Shore Marauders Friday night, September 28 at 7 PM at Connetquot High School. Come and root the Thunderbirds on!
