The T-Birds displayed a lot of character and overcame a large amount of adversity in a 28-24 victory over C.I. yesterday. The T-Birds totaled almost 400 yards of total offense, 306 on the ground. Defensively, the team was flying all over the field and forced three turnovers, one on special teams. It was a total-team effort and a well-deserved victory!
Offensively, Doug Smiroldo led the way with 105 total yards of offense (70 yards rushing) and scored two touchdowns. Tyler Shagi ran for 43 yards and two touchdowns and also completed 65% of his passes for 80 yards throwing the football. Kevin Escobar ran very well for 86 yards on 18 carries and James Tripodi had a hard-fought 51 yards rushing on 9 carries. Carmen Melillo had 74 total yards of offense and Vinny Pellizzi had three receptions for 30 yards and some great kick and punt returns.
The offensive line of Chris Shea, Ryan Schmid, Mike Cluen, Vinny Danseglio, James McHale, and Brett Silhan really put forth a strong effort in helping with some great protection for Shagi, and opening some big holes for the backs to run through.
Defensively, Tripodi led the way with 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Smiroldo had 9 tackles. Ryan Schmid, Matt Shulman, Mike Cluen, and Pellizzi played some great defense. Billy Booras made a terrific interception and Angelo DeLiso was in on 5 tackles and had a key quarterback sack late in the game.
James Campbell made all four of his extra points and had some terrific punts and kick-offs in a great special teams effort by the T-Birds.
The 2-2 T-Birds will host the 2-2 Commack Cougars this Saturday at 2:30 PM in a key game. It is Connetquot's Homecoming and a very large crowd is expected.
